About Us
DFCC Bank: Shaping Sri Lanka's Financial Future
Since 1955, DFCC Bank has been at the centre of Sri Lanka’s economic transformation. Established as the country’s first development finance institution under an Act of Parliament, in collaboration with the World Bank and the Government of Sri Lanka, DFCC Bank was created to empower entrepreneurs, finance industries, and fuel a young nation’s growth.
Over seven decades, that mission has evolved - from building industries to enabling communities, and from funding infrastructure to financing sustainability. Today, DFCC Bank stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most respected financial institutions, combining the strength of development finance with the dynamism of a full-service commercial bank.
Our Evolution
From Development Pioneer to Full-Service Financial Partner
DFCC Bank began with a clear mandate: provide long-term capital to shape industries and support private enterprise. In 1956, it became the first bank to list on the Colombo Stock Exchange, establishing a benchmark in financial innovation.
By the 1970s, the Bank’s focus expanded to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). A World Bank credit line in 1975, a dedicated SME unit in 1978, and a professional SME officer network by 1988 all marked milestones that put entrepreneurs - urban and rural - at the heart of its work.
In 2015, DFCC Bank PLC was formed through a strategic amalgamation with DFCC Vardhana Bank, creating a fully licensed commercial bank that blended its development finance DNA with a complete retail, SME, and corporate banking portfolio.

Our Story
Built to Develop. Evolved to Empower.
From its earliest years, DFCC Bank has financed businesses at their most uncertain stages, helping to grow industries like apparel, tourism, telecommunications, agriculture, and renewable energy. Many of Sri Lanka’s leading enterprises trace their origins to DFCC Bank’s support.
The Bank’s history is a legacy of firsts: the first development bank in Sri Lanka, the first bank listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange, the first mini-hydro and wind project financings, the first Green Bond. Each milestone reflects its role as a catalyst for transformation.
A Legacy of Firsts
Pioneering Growth, Shaping Industries
Over the decades, DFCC Bank has played a catalytic role in building the country's private sector, financing businesses from their earliest and most uncertain stages. Many of today's leading Sri Lankan enterprises in apparel, agriculture, construction, healthcare, manufacturing, telecom, and tourism began their journeys with DFCC support.
We led the way in championing key sectors such as SMEs, hospitality, mobile telecommunications, and renewable energy. Our influence extended beyond finance, with a focus on business facilitation and capacity building.
Evolving with Purpose
From Specialist to Full-Service Bank
To better serve a growing and diverse customer base, DFCC transitioned from a specialised development bank to a full-service commercial bank. This transformation was accelerated with the launch of DFCC Vardhana Bank, which introduced personal banking services and a broader product portfolio.
In 2015, DFCC Bank PLC was incorporated under the Companies Act No. 7 of 2007. Later that year, the Bank and its subsidiary amalgamated—creating a fully-fledged commercial bank supervised by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. This strategic merger combined the strengths of both institutions, enabling DFCC to serve individuals, SMEs, and large corporates with an integrated suite of financial solutions.
